What is BMI?

Overweight occurs due to a positive energy balance, where energy intake exceeds energy expenditure over a prolonged period.

There are several methods to assess whether a person is overweight. Body Mass Index (BMI) is one of them. If your BMI is over 25, you are classified as overweight.

Underweight

Your BMI indicates that you are underweight. We recommend that you contact your doctor for advice and guidance regarding your weight. Many people do not know that being underweight is unhealthy, but to feel good, it is important to have a healthy body weight.

Healthy Weight

Your BMI indicates that you are of normal weight. We do not recommend that you lose weight or start a diet. The best thing for you is to continue eating a healthy and varied diet and maintaining your active lifestyle. If there are many days when you eat too much or unhealthy food, you might consider meal replacements to maintain your weight.

Overweight

Your BMI indicates that you are overweight. If your BMI is higher than 27, the risks of obesity-related health problems are also higher. However, to assess your health more accurately, it would be appropriate to use several different measures. If you are a woman with a waist circumference over 88 cm, or a man with a waist circumference over 102 cm, you have an increased risk of lifestyle-related diseases. It is important that you do not gain more weight, but instead try to reduce your weight. A good way to lose weight is by trying a VLCD diet. VLCD stands for Very Low Calorie Diet and involves consuming a limited number of calories over a limited period. The Nupo diet offers quick, safe, and effective weight loss, which is also clinically proven.

Obese

If your BMI is 30 or higher, you may have a harmful level of overweight. You are at an increased risk of developing diseases such as high blood pressure, lipid disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and type 2 diabetes. The Nupo diet can help you achieve weight loss and thus improve your BMI. However, we recommend that you contact your doctor for advice and guidance regarding your weight.

Your waist measurement is important for calculating BMI

The chart above shows the international classification of Body Mass Index (BMI), which is commonly used as an objective measure to assess body weight in relation to height. While BMI is a useful screening tool for identifying overweight and obesity at a population level, it does not differentiate between fat mass and lean body mass.

As a result, individuals with high muscle mass—such as athletes or physically active persons—may present with a high BMI without having excess body fat. For this reason, waist circumference is often considered a more accurate indicator of abdominal fat distribution and associated health risks. In clinical practice, combining BMI with waist measurement provides a more nuanced assessment of whether weight loss is advisable.

Risk of lifestyle diseases with elevated BMI

Excess weight increases the risk of developing lifestyle-related diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. These conditions can impair health and often require medical treatment. If left unaddressed, severe obesity can shorten life expectancy and reduce overall quality of life. That is why it is important to take excess weight seriously.

In England, the prevalence of excess weight continues to rise. According to the most recent 2023–2024 data from the Office for Health Improvement & Disparities (OHID):

  • 64,5%
of adults (aged 18+) are overweight or living with obesity, equating to roughly 34 million people fingertips.phe.org.uk+15gov.uk+15nelincsdata.net+15.

  • of these: 26.5 % (approximately 14 million adults) are classified as obese, that is, BMI ≥ 30 .

You can do something about it

A BMI over 25 and a waist measurement over 88 cm for women and 102 cm for men increase the risk of developing lifestyle diseases.

If you want to become healthier and reduce the risk of developing lifestyle diseases, your energy intake must be less than your energy expenditure, so you are in an energy deficit.

The body is quite ingenious; if you eat and drink too much, the extra energy is converted into fat, which is stored in the body's fat reserves for later use.

However, in our time and part of the world, this is not so beneficial, as we never need these extra fat reserves, and over the years, many people gradually get used to eating a little too much every day, resulting in an unhealthy lifestyle.
