What is BMI?

Overweight occurs due to a positive energy balance, where energy intake exceeds energy expenditure over a prolonged period.

There are several methods to assess whether a person is overweight. Body Mass Index (BMI) is one of them. If your BMI is over 25, you are classified as overweight.

Your waist measurement is important for calculating BMI

In the chart above, you can see the BMI categories. BMI is an objective measure of excess weight, but it doesn’t indicate how much of your weight comes from fat versus muscle.

Muscle weighs more than fat, so if you’re well-trained and muscular, you might have a high BMI without being overweight. That’s why your waist measurement is often a better indicator of whether you should consider losing weight.

Risk of lifestyle diseases with elevated BMI

Excess weight increases the risk of developing lifestyle-related diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. These conditions can impair health and often require medical treatment. If left unaddressed, severe obesity can shorten life expectancy and reduce overall quality of life. That is why it is important to take excess weight seriously.

In England, the prevalence of excess weight continues to rise. According to the most recent 2023–2024 data from the Office for Health Improvement & Disparities (OHID):

  • 64,5%
of adults (aged 18+) are overweight or living with obesity, equating to roughly 34 million people fingertips.phe.org.uk+15gov.uk+15nelincsdata.net+15.

  • of these: 26.5 % (approximately 14 million adults) are classified as obese, that is, BMI ≥ 30 .

You can do something about it

A BMI over 25 and a waist measurement over 88 cm for women and 102 cm for men increase the risk of developing lifestyle diseases.

If you want to become healthier and reduce the risk of developing lifestyle diseases, your energy intake must be less than your energy expenditure, so you are in an energy deficit.

The body is quite ingenious; if you eat and drink too much, the extra energy is converted into fat, which is stored in the body's fat reserves for later use.

However, in our time and part of the world, this is not so beneficial, as we never need these extra fat reserves, and over the years, many people gradually get used to eating a little too much every day, resulting in an unhealthy lifestyle.
