What is BMI?
Overweight occurs due to a positive energy balance, where energy intake exceeds energy expenditure over a prolonged period. There are several methods to assess whether a person is overweight. Body Mass Index (BMI) is one of them. If your BMI is over 25, you are classified as overweight.

BMI 0-18,4
Your BMI indicates that you are underweight. We recommend that you contact your doctor for advice and guidance regarding your weight. Many people do not know that being underweight is unhealthy, but to feel good, it is important to have a healthy body weight.
BMI 18,5-25
Your BMI indicates that you are of normal weight. We do not recommend that you lose weight or start a diet. The best thing for you is to continue eating a healthy and varied diet and maintaining your active lifestyle. If there are many days when you eat too much or unhealthy food, you might consider meal replacements to maintain your weight.
BMI 25,1-30
Your BMI indicates that you are overweight. If your BMI is higher than 27, the risks of obesity-related health problems are also higher. However, to assess your health more accurately, it would be appropriate to use several different measures. If you are a woman with a waist circumference over 88 cm, or a man with a waist circumference over 102 cm, you have an increased risk of lifestyle-related diseases. It is important that you do not gain more weight, but instead try to reduce your weight. A good way to lose weight is by trying a VLCD diet. VLCD stands for Very Low Calorie Diet and involves consuming a limited number of calories over a limited period. The Nupo diet offers quick, safe, and effective weight loss, which is also clinically proven.
BMI> 30
If your BMI is 30 or higher, you may have a harmful level of overweight. You are at an increased risk of developing diseases such as high blood pressure, lipid disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and type 2 diabetes. The Nupo diet can help you achieve weight loss and thus improve your BMI. However, we recommend that you contact your doctor for advice and guidance regarding your weight.
Your waist measurement is important for calculating BMI
In the chart above, you can see the BMI classifications. BMI is an objective measure of the degree of overweight, but it does not indicate how much of the weight is fat versus muscle. Muscles weigh more than fat. Therefore, if you are well-trained and have large muscles, you may have a high BMI without being overweight. This is why your waist measurement is often a much better indicator of whether you should lose weight or not.
Risk of lifestyle diseases with elevated BMI
Overweight increases the risk of developing lifestyle diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, type-2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Lifestyle diseases weaken health and may require medication. Untreated severe overweight can also lead to a shortened lifespan and reduced quality of life. Therefore, it is important to address overweight issues.
In Denmark, the prevalence of overweight and severe overweight is increasing. Recent studies from the Danish Health Authority show that 51% of the adult Danish population is overweight, of which approximately 17% are severely overweight. Nationally, this means that more than 1.75 million adult Danes are overweight, with around 900,000 of them being severely overweight.
You can do something about it
A BMI over 25 and a waist measurement over 88 cm for women and 102 cm for men increase the risk of developing lifestyle diseases. If you want to become healthier and reduce the risk of developing lifestyle diseases, your energy intake must be less than your energy expenditure, so you are in an energy deficit. The body is quite ingenious; if you eat and drink too much, the extra energy is converted into fat, which is stored in the body's fat reserves for later use. However, in our time and part of the world, this is not so beneficial, as we never need these extra fat reserves, and over the years, many people gradually get used to eating a little too much every day, resulting in an unhealthy lifestyle.
